Flora of Taygetos (the Spartan mountain) has caused scientific herbal interest for several years. Mainly due to the fact that this mountain with limestone blocks forms the phytogeographical region with the largest number of endemic plants in Greece. Taygetos is indeed well known not only for its rich and rare flora, but also for the pharmaceutical value of many plant species.
In ancient Sparta, honey along with the “black broth” was one of the main foods of the Spartans soldiers.
Honey was so valuable, that a typical example of nutrition habits was the “honeymoon” period: One month before the end of the military training, young Spartans, withdrawn to Taygetos mountain and ate only honey. After they had completed the body training it was time to get their bodies in peak strength with the help of this valuable food.

The beekeeper’s story
In 1980 Mr. Michael together with his wife Maria began timidly as amateurs owning 5 hives in the garden of their house in Akritochori Messinia.
The honey they produced was just enough for the needs of their family, for their three children (Christina, Antonia and the Charalambos). Michael and Mary decided after a few years, from amateurs to become professional beekeepers to share the great taste and nutritional value of the honey with all their fellow human beings.
So in 1983 the 5 cells had been 200 and were transferred from garden to the Taygetos mountain.
In 1984 actively joined the Athens market. The excellent quality of their products made them acquire new customers.
In 1994 Michael’ son Harry took over the business. He attended beekeeping training seminars and has now has the appropriate knowledge for the professional beekeeping, incorporating the art of his parents and their secret of success. Michael and Maria continue until today to produce honey and all its derivatives with a lot of desire and passion. They develop the business and take part in large honey festivals.They are currently enrolled in cooperative Kalamata beekeepers.
